What Is Lombok Like?
Lombok sits one island east of Bali and delivers what Bali offered fifteen years ago: surf beaches without beach clubs, a 3,726 m volcano you can climb, and hotel prices roughly 30–40% lower. You can reach it in 90 minutes by fast boat from Bali or 30 minutes by air. Most travellers split their time between Kuta in the south and the Gili Islands off the northwest coast.
Things to Do in Lombok
1. Climb Mount Rinjani. Indonesia's second-highest volcano. The classic trek is 2 days/1 night to the crater rim from Sembalun (about $150–250 with a licensed operator, park fee included). Book a registered guide — solo climbing is not permitted. The mountain closes in the rainy season, roughly January to March.
2. See Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach). One of only a handful of pink-sand beaches in the world, in Lombok's remote southeast. The sand gets its color from crushed red coral. Go by car from Kuta (about 2.5 hours) or on a boat tour that combines nearby snorkel islands. There are no facilities — bring water and cash for the small entry fee.
3. Surf Kuta Lombok. Gerupuk, Selong Belanak and Mawi cover every level. Selong Belanak's long sandy bottom makes it one of Southeast Asia's best beginner waves; lessons on the beach run about $15–25 for two hours.
4. Island-hop the Gilis. Gili Trawangan for nightlife, Gili Air for balance, Gili Meno for quiet. Public boats leave from Bangsal harbour for pocket change; turtles are practically guaranteed off Gili Air's east coast.
5. Chase waterfalls in the north. Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile near Senaru are the two big ones — cold, powerful and reached by a 45-minute jungle walk.

You have three options, and the right one depends on where you're staying in Bali:
Where to Stay in Lombok
Base in Kuta Lombok for surf and the south-coast beaches, Senggigi for sunset resorts close to the airport road, or the Gili Islands for snorkelling and nightlife. We compare all three areas — with picks from budget homestays to five-star resorts — in our full guide to the best hotels in Lombok.
Best Time to Visit Lombok
May to September is dry season: sunny days, calm seas for the Gili crossings, and prime Rinjani conditions. July and August are busiest. The wet season (November–March) still has dry mornings, but Rinjani closes and fast-boat crossings can get rough.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get from Bali to Lombok?
Three ways: a fast boat from Padangbai or Serangan (1.5–2.5 hours, $30–45), a 30–40 minute flight from Denpasar to Lombok International (from about $40), or the slow public ferry from Padangbai to Lembar (4–5 hours, a few dollars). Fly if you're heading to Kuta Lombok; take the fast boat for the Gili Islands.
Is Pink Beach in Lombok worth visiting?
Yes, if you treat it as a day trip. Tangsi (Pink) Beach is about 2.5 hours by car from Kuta Lombok, with pink-tinted sand from crushed red coral and good snorkelling nearby. There are no restaurants or shops, so bring water, cash and sun protection.
How many days do you need in Lombok?
Five to seven days covers the highlights: two nights in Kuta for the south-coast beaches, two nights on a Gili island, and two days for waterfalls or a Rinjani rim trek. A quick 3-day trip is enough for either the Gilis or Kuta, but not both comfortably.
